Biography

Assoc. Prof. Miguel Escobar Varela, Ph.D., is a scholar, researcher, and Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), within the Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He is recognized internationally for his interdisciplinary contributions to digital humanities, theatre studies, Southeast Asian cultural heritage, and computational approaches to the humanities. He also serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Computational Social Science and Humanities at NUS.

His research focuses on the intersection between cultural heritage studies and computational methods, including natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, machine learning, and network analysis. A major area of his scholarship is the study of Southeast Asian performing arts, particularly Indonesian theatre traditions such as wayang kulit, as well as the transformation of cultural practices through historical, social, and digital processes.

Assoc. Prof. Escobar Varela has made significant contributions to digital theatre research and computational humanities. His book Theater as Data: Computational Journeys into Theater Research (University of Michigan Press, 2021) explores how data-driven approaches can complement traditional humanities methods by using computational tools to analyze performance history, theatrical structures, and cultural patterns.

His research projects include the development of digital archives and computational tools for preserving and analyzing cultural materials. Among his notable initiatives is the Contemporary Wayang Archive, which documents contemporary Javanese wayang kulit performances through digital recordings, metadata, translations, and analytical resources. He has also worked on projects involving artificial intelligence for historical Malay documents, including the use of machine learning models for processing archival materials.

In addition to his research, Assoc. Prof. Escobar Varela actively contributes to academic communities through publications, interdisciplinary collaborations, open-access research practices, and professional service in digital humanities and computational research. His scholarship demonstrates how emerging technologies can be integrated with cultural studies to preserve heritage, generate new forms of knowledge, and expand methodologies in the humanities.
